CS DETERMINATION IN COAL SAMPLES BY FLASH COMBUSTION

04/02/2022

Discover the new EMA 502 Elemental Analyzer CHNS-O working principle and how it enables carbon and sulfur determination in coal samples.

CS DETERMINATION IN COAL SAMPLES BY FLASH COMBUSTION
Coal is one of the most essential fossil fuels. It is mainly composed of carbon, with variable amounts of other elements, such as water, rock residues, volatile matter, and sulfur compounds, depending on the place where it formed and which kind of soil or rock determined its formation.

The level of sulfur concentration in coal influences the dispersion of pollutants, such as sulfur dioxide, sulphuric acid during combustion. The lower the sulfur content, the better the quality of coal, which continues to be the world's leading energy source, despite growing concerns about environmental pollution and the effects of CO2 emissions.

In light of this, it is essential to find effective tools to determine the amount of carbon and sulfur in coal and assess its quality. This is the aim of the analysis carried out on two different coal samples, using the innovative EMA 502 Elemental Analyzer CHNS-O.

EMA 502 Elemental Analyzer working principle in CS determination

EMA 502 Elemental Analyzer working principle in CS determination
EMA 502 Elemental Analyzer CHNS-O is the accurate and reliable solution for the determination of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur, and oxygen in various industrial sectors.

The analysis starts with the sample combustion inside the VELP combustion furnace at a temperature of over 1000°C, to obtain elemental compounds.

VELP Vcopper™, a formulation of highly active copper powder, is placed in the lower part of the reactor to help the reduction of NOx into N2.

The gas stream reaches the gas-chromatographic column which ensures homogenous and modular temperature leading to a complete separation of all the elements for the final detection by TCD.

The innovative LoGas™ Thermal Conductivity Detector (TCD), with no requirement for a reference gas, enables the detection of all gases content.

Unmatched performance, proven accuracy, and tested reliability

Two different coal samples were analyzed as they were in nature.

Results show that they contain a similar percentage of carbon but a different level of sulfur concentration. The sample containing a lower amount of sulfur is qualitatively better and therefore has a lower environmental impact during combustion.

Moreover, the same data highlight the precision and accuracy of the EMA 502 Elemental Analyser CHNS-O in carbon and sulfur determination, as they are included in the tolerance allowed by the relevant certificate of analysis.
