The EMA 402XL is Velp’s macro elemental analyzer for the simultaneous determination of Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, and Sulfur in a single configuration. 

Designed for CHNS analysis of macro organic samples, it delivers high accuracy, robustness, and ease of use across a wide range of matrices, including soil, fertilizers, biomass, wastes, polymers, petrochemical products, fuels, coal, and coke.

Its vertical combustion system ensures complete oxidation and repeatability. At the same time, advanced automation and reliable detectors support fast analysis, high productivity, and reduced operating costs for routine and high-demand laboratories.

Extra-Large Capacity with Reusable Ceramic Crucibles

The innovative crucible technology enables direct analysis of extra-large solid or liquid samples up to 3 grams, ideal for CHNS determinations on heterogeneous samples.

Compared to traditional tin foils or capsules, reusable ceramic crucibles significantly simplify sample preparation.

They also enable automated ash removal and help achieve more representative results, all while reducing waste and operating costs.

Automation that Drives Efficiency

Automation defines the EMA 402XL. The integrated 100-position electronic autosampler enables continuous, unattended analysis and supports non-sequential operation, allowing priority handling of urgent samples.

All analytical phases, from sample loading to crucible disposal, are managed automatically. Samples are transferred from the autosampler by a mechanical arm and introduced into the analyzer through a dedicated vertical system.

After analysis, the ashes remain inside the ceramic crucible and are removed with it.

At the core of the EMA 402XL is a dynamic, reagent-free vertical furnace, reaching up to 1350 °C, ensuring complete oxidation of complex macro samples.

Carbon, Hydrogen, and Sulfur are quantified using an NDIR detector, while Nitrogen is measured by a Thermal Conductivity Detector (TCD).

The combination of high combustion temperature, optimized gas flow, and dual detection technology ensures accurate and repeatable results in compliance with ISO and ASTM standards for CHNS analysis.

Monitoring oxygen consumption during combustion also enables Total Oxygen Demand (TOD) determination, supporting the sample's calorific value estimation.

The EMA 402XL is managed by dedicated EMASoft XL™ software, which provides intuitive control over all analytical steps, from method setup to result visualization.

The detectors provide real-time visibility of analytical signals and system performance, while automatic leak checks and system diagnostics support consistent reliability over time. Adaptive combustion control automatically adjusts analysis conditions according to the sample’s behavior, ensuring complete and reproducible combustion.

Connectivity with the Velp Ermes ensures secure cloud-based access, data sharing, and full traceability from any device. Users can monitor results, manage analyses, and schedule maintenance remotely, maintaining complete operational control.

The EMA 402XL combines low operating costs with a reagent-free combustion process, delivering reliable analysis and minimizing laboratory expenses. Its robust design extends the lifetime of key components, including the reduction tube, while front-access maintenance simplifies routine maintenance, helping to reduce downtime.

Users benefit from the flexibility of operating with either helium or argon as a carrier gas, without requiring hardware modifications.
